Girls on the Rise Program

The Girls on the Rise Program is a multifaceted empowerment program for girls in Ward 8 and their families. Operating at the Mary Virginia Merrick Center in Southeast, D.C. the program provides safe, enriching after-school, summer camp, and family support programs for girls ages 8-18.

Program activities offer the Girls on the Rise an opportunity to discover who they are as young women - their dreams, desires, capabilities, skills, and talents. The program is based on the Positive Youth Development Principles of caring, contribution, connection, competence, confidence, and character. We give the girls hope to envision a plan and the tools to build their futures.

In addition, the parents and families of the girls receive comprehensive support services such as:

  • case management
  • crisis counseling
  • mentoring
  • job coaching
  • parenting groups and training
  • referrals to outside agencies

The program also provides quarterly community events.
